Fun Facts About Breitling
Breitling, with its famous wings as its flag, has taken the world by storm with its annual chronolog, a yearly showcase of its watch collections.
With the influx of Breitling replicas, many of us here will at least own a Breitling, even if it’s just a Breitling replica. As such, many of us will definitely have many questions regarding this remarkable watch-maker. What is the reasons that make this company tick? Who founded Breitling? Why is it’s icon a wing? In this article, I’ll take you through some of the facts behind this giant in the watch industry.
When was Breitling set up?
Breitling was founded in 1884 by Leon Breitling in Switzerland. This bright young lad was one of the first who built the chronograph, also commonly referred to as a “stopwatch” in modern times.
Why is Breitling’s logo a pair of wings?
To answer this, let’s go back into the past for a moment.
During the firm’s infancy, the logo was etched beneath the dial. It was hard to identify the signature “Montbrillant”, and later “Breitling” because of the position of the engravement. Then, the 1950s, the more-or-less modern logo, the Breitling wings with a “B” initial at the center, was borned.
Why the wings, then? That’s because this watch was initially meant for aviators. Breitling’s drive towards chronographs in its early days was fuelled partly by the intention to build precise time-measuring mechanisms for pilots. One of their designs in the past was also influenced by a close aviator friend of Leon Breitling.
Did Breitling ever go to space?
Yes! In 1962, Lt.Commander Scott Carpenter took the Breitling Cosmonaute aboard Aurora 7 during the mission codenamed “Mercury Mission MA-7″. It was said that this watch was made personally for him, and he intentionally wore it aboard for the mission.
